“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”
Students
Over the years, our student population has participated in a wide variety of leadership activities. For example in 2012-2013 our grade 6 students organized two school-wide food drives. The students were also involved in selling poppies for Remembrance Day, collecting Toonies for the Education Foundation, in making and selling crafts to raise funds for CHEO and cancer research, in preparing gift baskets for needy families for the holidays and providing gifts for seniors who are isolated at Christmas. In other years, examples of the kind of character building initiatives the students participated in are collecting gently used/new school items for a school in Afghanistan and writing Valentines for Veterans which were delivered to the Perley Hospital. Our students also showed leadership in sports participating in all sporting events and demonstrating both skill and sportsmanship. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge student contributions in our classrooms, school announcements, newsletters, assemblies, our communal announcements, Walks of Fame and end-of-year ceremonies.
Staff
Our staff members hold professional qualifications including Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education, Arts, Sciences and Physical Education, as well as, additional qualifications in Special Education, English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language, Music, Visual Arts, and Computers in Education. Our teachers, Early Childhood Educators, educational assistants, library technician, office staff and custodians actively participate in professional development opportunities, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy, but also seek out other professional activities which will enhance curriculum delivery and the completion of their duties. Some of our teachers are actively involved in the mentoring of new teachers through on-site initiatives, as Associate Teachers for Faculty of Education students and as Ministry of Education and/or Board Lead Teachers.
Parents/Guardians/Volunteers
Last year, our volunteers contributed many hours of support for the benefit of students in our school helping out in many ways such as: in the Library, in the classrooms, and as supervisors for field trips and lunch hour activities on the school yard rink. Our dedicated school council meets monthly and organized many fundraising and social events for the school community; contributing over $13,000.00 to support the Arts, the Library, Technology, Physical Education and other initiatives. As invaluable partners, we thank and recognize the efforts of our parents, guardians and volunteers on an on-going basis and via our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast.
Community
We welcome our community partners into the school and recognize their efforts through the newsletters, thank you cards and letters. Our annual Welcome Back BBQ is attended by students, parents, staff, former students and neighbours as a celebration of Briargreen PS's key role within the community. We have always enjoyed support from a number of community partners for this. This year our thanks go to Shoppers Drug Mart (Greenbank location), the M&M Meat Shop and the Metro (both on Greenbank), and Starbucks (the Iris location).
